About the event
Stephen McGown undertakes a bucket-list trip on his motorbike from London to Cape Town in 2011. In Mali, he is captured by Al Qaeda and held for ransom for nearly 6 years in the Sahara Desert. This monodrama is based on Stephen’s story as recorded by Tudor Caradoc-Davies in Six Years with Al Qaeda. It recounts the remarkable story and Stephen’s evolution and learnings through his years of capture. Created by a multiple award-winning team, DESERT CHESS is written by Mike van Graan and features Wessel Pretorius directed by Wolf Britz. Soundscape by Philip Miller with visuals by Marcos Martins.
