Yiyun Li, the renowned Chinese-born author and winner of the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Memoir or Autobiography, has triggered a profound intellectual and emotional earthquake across the Chinese-speaking world with her latest book, Things in Nature Merely Grow. As a mother who has endured the unimaginable tragedy of losing both of her children to suicide, Li maintains a haunting, dead-calm composure throughout the book. Within Chinese-speaking communities, it is perhaps less her literary prose itself and more her staggering family tragedy combined with her absolute, resolute flight-fleeing native culture and abandoning the mother tongue -- that has turned her into a subject of intense fascination and debate. Why does a creator who builds her fortress entirely in English, completely severing her emotional ties to her native language, still provoke such fierce conflicts of emotion, pain, and bewilderment in the Chinese-speaking world? This upcoming panel discussing will focus on the book and its far-reaching impact through the dual lenses of literary achievement and expression, as well as psychological trauma and coping mechanisms. Featuring panellists including: neuroscience researcher and psychotherapist Li Shao, dedicated literary reviewer and blogger Leon Yang, UBC assistant professor of modern Chinese popular culture Renren Yang, and young financial professional Ray Li. Accessibility Information VPL is committed to making our programs accessible for all.
