Book Club: Perdido Street Station
About the event
In the sprawling city of New Crobuzon, humans live alongside strange species, grotesque technologies, arcane sciences, and creatures that defy easy classification. When scientist Isaac Dan der Grimnebulin accepts an unusual commission from a winged stranger desperate to fly again, his experiments unleash something far more dangerous than either of them imagined.
China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station is a landmark of the New Weird, blending fantasy, science fiction, horror, steampunk, and political fiction into a world that feels simultaneously fantastical and grimily alive. Its dense cityscape offers plenty to examine in worldbuilding, atmosphere, invented cultures, genre-blending, description, and the relationship between setting and story.
Read the novel beforehand and come ready to discuss it both as readers and as writers—how Miéville makes an enormous and unfamiliar world feel inhabited, introduces strange concepts without over-explaining them, uses the city itself as a narrative force, and balances imaginative excess with character, conflict, and plot.
