Why José Feliciano — and why September 10?
September 10 is the birthday of José Feliciano, the Puerto Rican-born, internationally acclaimed singer and guitarist whose life offers a fascinating lens on productive ageing, identity and reinvention. Blind from birth, Feliciano built a career crossing languages, cultures, musical genres and generations. His unconventional rendition of the U.S. national anthem at the 1968 World Series was highly controversial—yet decades later came to be recognized as groundbreaking. And he kept creating. At 74, Feliciano released another album, *Behind This Guitar*.
His story invites a question particularly relevant after 50: How do we remain open to becoming someone we haven't been yet—without rejecting the person we have already become? What will we explore?
Through lively conversations in pairs and small groups, we'll consider:
• Who am I when my job title no longer defines me? • Which labels have served me—and which have become too small? • What do I want more of, less of, or differently in my next chapter? • Could my next chapter be a remix rather than a complete reinvention? • What does productive ageing mean if productivity is about more than paid employment?
What might you take away? Not necessarily a new career plan—but perhaps a different way of thinking about what comes next.
You may leave with greater clarity about what you want to retain, what you are ready to release, and what part of yourself may still be waiting for expression.
You'll also have the opportunity to hear how others over 50 are approaching similar questions—and perhaps discover possibilities you hadn't considered on your own.
