Sleeping with a Tiger

Austria “[A] highly original biopic … A radical depiction of Lassnig’s inner and outer life, one that captures the enduring enigma of her art.” VIFF 2024 Sleeping with a Tiger skillfully blends documentary, fiction, and stylishly daring cinematic techniques to explore the life of the extraordinary Austrian artist Maria Lassnig (1919–2014). Portrayed by Birgit Minichmayr (Berlinale 2009 Best Actress winner for Everyone Else), Lassnig is presented through each key milestone of her life, from her status as a childhood prodigy to her later recognition as an acclaimed painter. The film delves into her struggles, particularly her fight against societal conventions and her relentless effort to assert her artistic vision in a male-dominated world. As we witness her emergence despite the considerable odds against her, the film reveals that her success is the result of an uncompromising, authentic approach that defined her career from the very beginning.
