Music event: North African traditions with contemporary jazz and improvisation
About the event
Aleph Quintet draws on the musical traditions of North Africa, the language of contemporary jazz and the power of improvisation to develop a sound of their own. The Brussels-based quintet has established itself on the international jazz scene, performing across Europe and beyond, and earning accolades including ‘Révélation’ from Jazz Magazine and Best Belgian Jazz Album at Jazz à Liège. The quintet was also named best foreign group of the year by both Jazz News and Jazz Magazine.
On their new album *Hiwar*, dialogue takes centre stage: between cultures, heritage and innovation. The Arabic word “hiwâr” means “dialogue”, and that spirit runs through every note. Each member brings their own background to the table, shaping a collective sound that is rooted and resolutely contemporary. *Hiwar* received the highest honour from Jazz Magazine, a ‘Choc’, and was featured in Bandcamp’s ‘The Best Jazz on Bandcamp’.
