How do emerging directors get through the door of a high-end production? Director shadowing offers a route in with real access to the set, a chance to demystify the craft, and professional networks that turn potential into a career. Through We Are Parable’s Sony-supported Momentum programme, writer-director Dean Leon Anderson shadowed John Hayes on the BBC drama This City Is Ours, produced by Simon Maloney. Here, the three reunite to explore how shadowing opens doors for emerging Black British directors and builds a stronger, more diverse directing pipeline. For Anderson, a S.O.U.L. Fest alumnus and inaugural Reel Impact Fund recipient, it’s a welcome return to the festival.
