Welcome to our first Ladies who read event!
To kick start our women-focused Amsterdam book club, we invite you to read and discuss Margaret Atwood's masterpiece *The Handmaid's Tale*.
Published in 1985, this dystopia set in a near future recalls aspects of today's patriarchal and anti-democratic world. This novel is a compelling reminder of what freedom and bodily autonomy truly means, and that we should never take them for granted.
This is a book you will never forget reading.
Please note this can be a difficult read - addressing topics such as SA, state surveillance and dark thoughts - so if you cannot manage it but would still like to come for a cup of tea and a friendly chat, please join!
All individuals who identify as women or non-binary are welcome. Discussions will be held in English for inclusivity, but you can read the book in the language of your choice. No literary or feminist expertise is required.
This first book was chosen by the organiser. From here, we choose together - members are invited to vote on options and to nominate books for future meetings.
