Narayamabushikō (The Ballad of Narayama)

This play portrays the emotional turmoil of a son, Tatsuhei, and his elderly mother, Orin, who are attempting to follow the custom, handed down in a remote village in Shinano, of abandoning elderly people in the mountains. Combining traditional aesthetics with staging that challenges conventional expectations, the play vividly depicts aging, death, and the bond between parents and children.

Tetsumon (The Iron Gate)

The ghost of an old servant appears before a monk visiting Zenkoji Temple to recount the tale of a princess taken by a messenger of death and the tragedy surrounding the iron gate. This Noh play, an adaptation of Maurice Maeterlinck's play "La Mort de Tintagiles" by the haiku poet Takahama Kyoshi, symbolically expresses the sorrow of facing an absurd death.
