Our Land

Lucrecia Martel’s first feature-length cinema documentary spotlights an indigenous community’s struggle for justice. Their leader was murdered in 2009 in a conflict over land; the Argentine government obstructed the judicial process. Martel shines a light on the history of a people. October 2009, Northern Argentina. Businessman Dario Amín is trying, along with two associates from a mining company, to drive members of the Chuschagasta community off their land – land Amín claims to own. The resulting confrontation culminates in the murder of the community’s leader, Javier Chocobar. The incident was recorded on video. Following countless protests, a trial finally commences nine years later, having been actively held up all this time by the government.
