About the event

Spectacular film about the rebellion of the slave Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) against the Romans, partially directed by Kubrick. The epic won four Oscars: Best male supporting role (Peter Ustinov), Best art direction, Best cinematography and Best costumes. Stanley Kubrick took over from Anthony Mann halfway through the shoot and experienced a lot of interference from Hollywood studio bosses. Kirk Douglas charismatically plays the rebellious slave Spartacus. After the rebellions first victory against the aristocratic Romans there is hope for Spartacus and his men. However, the struggle is far from over and they suffer a terrifying defeat.
