Pan’s Labyrinth
About the event
A deliciously dark fable that marries political conviction with compelling performances, this 20th-anniversary re-release of del Toro’s multi-award winner is the perfect synthesis of vividly realised storytelling and the very boldest of imaginations. Representing del Toro’s view that ‘Fascism represents the ultimate horror’, Pan’s Labyrinth, which celebrates its 20th anniversary, is regarded as a pinnacle of the director’s career. Set after the Spanish Civil War, this genre-defying fable concerns Ofelia, a young woman at the mercy of her sadistic stepfather, a captain in Franco’s army. Ofelia finds refuge in a fantastical underground world that offers both terror and beauty and which gives full reign to her burgeoning adolescent imagination. Jason Wood, Executive Director of Public Programme and Audiences A StudioCanal re-release. Screen: NFT1. Screening details: English language subtitles; 3D.
