Death and Rebirth
What can understanding death teach us about how to live? Death is something we all encounter, yet it is often something we avoid thinking or talking about. In this five-week course, we turn towards the subject with curiosity and openness, exploring what Tibetan Buddhism can teach us about death, dying and what comes after. Course Details With Venerable Khadro 8, 15, 22, 29 October & 5 November 18:00–20:00 Hybrid
About the Course
What happens at the time of death? What does Buddhism mean by rebirth? What is the bardo, and how does the mind move through the different stages of dying? Over five weeks, we will explore the Tibetan Buddhist understanding of death, the stages of dying, the intermediate state (bardo) and rebirth. We will also look at how reflecting on our own mortality can change the way we live — helping us recognise what matters, work with fear and uncertainty, and meet change and loss with greater stability and compassion. The course also has a very practical side. We will discuss how to support someone who is dying, what prayers and practices are traditionally recommended, and how we can prepare ourselves to meet death with greater awareness and peace. Venerable Khadro brings personal experience to this subject. Alongside her Buddhist training and teaching, she has worked in hospice care as a Buddhist chaplain, supporting people and their families through the experience of dying and death. The course includes teachings, meditation, reflection and opportunities for discussion. You don’t need to be Buddhist or have any previous experience — just an openness to explore one of life’s most profound realities. While this course is based on the Tibetan Buddhist perspective, you are welcome to join simply out of curiosity about death, dying, meaning and how we want to live.
This course is offered as a standalone course and is also the fifth module of Yeshin Norbu’s Discovering Buddhism programme.
