Makoto Ozone

Makoto Ozone is a remarkable voice in both jazz and classical music. He was the first Japanese artist to sign an exclusive contract with CBS, followed by his debut album 'Ozone'. Since then, he has collaborated with jazz legends such as Gary Burton and Chick Corea, and his compositions have been performed by renowned orchestras worldwide. In his trio, Ozone brings both worlds together: the structure and precision of classical music and the spontaneity of jazz improvisation. He grew up in Kobe, Japan, and taught himself to play jazz, initially on organ, later on piano, with his father as his guide. After graduating from the Berklee College of Music, he made his solo debut at Carnegie Hall in 1983, which marked his international breakthrough. This concert is curated by saxophonist Benjamin Herman, who recorded his recent album The Tokyo Sessions in Japan and knows the Japanese jazz scene like no other. With Makoto Ozone on piano, Shimpei Ogawa on bass, and Kunito Kitai on drums.
