In Father, you follow Michal, an ordinary father who forgets his baby in the car in an unguarded moment. That one moment changes everything. The film shows how such a fatal mistake disrupts an entire family: guilt, lawsuits, and a marriage under strain. Director Tereza Nvotová bases the film on the so-called 'forgotten baby syndrome,' a phenomenon in which parents accidentally leave their child behind in a vehicle.
Director Nvotová's perspective
Nvotová, known for Nightsiren, initially did not want to make this film. Yet the subject stayed with her. She recognized the vulnerability every parent knows and asked herself: what if this happens to me? She chose an observational style, inspired by Gus Van Sant's Elephant. In doing so, she avoids judgment and allows the viewer to get close to the characters.
