About the Event
Think you know manga?
Because of its mass appeal, the craft of manga is often overlooked even by its most avid fans. The way a page is laid out, how a single panel can slow time or speed up your heart? None of that happens by accident.
In this session, amateur experts Myle Yan Tay and Miriam Cheong will walk you through the tools used in manga to grip readers. Through an informal presentation, they will showcase the diverse and deliberate visual lives of their favourite manga and guide you through an optional hands-on session to apply the techniques they share about – bring along your sketchbook and favourite pencil for this! Whether you’re a lifelong fan or simply curious about manga, this is your chance to see the medium with fresh eyes!
Look forward to:
• A new appreciation for the craft and intentionality behind beloved shounen and shoujo manga
• An understanding of how manga reflects and responds to the world around us
• An optional hands-on session to apply the tips and tricks that mangakas use (please bring drawing material)
About the Presenters
Myle Yan Tay is a writer of plays and prose. His debut novel, catskull, won Book of the Year and Best Literary Work at the Singapore Book Awards and was shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize. His plays Statement Piece and Brown Boys Don't Tell Jokes were staged by Checkpoint Theatre; both were nominated for "Best Production" and "Best Script" at the Straits Times! Life Theatre Awards. He co-hosts "Comic Sans," produced by Andas Productions, an award-winning podcast about comics for those who are sans knowledge.
Miriam Cheong writes, acts and creates theatre. When she's not doing that, she's staring dubiously at brooding anime men with long white hair.
