About the event

Refined telling of the true story of Italian author Goliarda Sapienza, who winds up in prison in Rome. There, she rediscovers herself and her writerly impulse after meeting political activist and fellow detainee Roberta. Rome, 1980. After her magnum opus The Art of Joy , which she’s been working on for ten years, is rejected by the Italian publishing world, writer Goliarda finds herself in prison for stealing – as a provocation – jewellery from a wealthy friend. Meeting a number of young fellow inmates proves a life-changing experience for Goliarda, who discovers a world without class distinctions.
