Cría Cuervos is a 1976 Spanish film by director Carlos Saura. The story is set in Madrid in the final days of the Franco regime. Ana, an 8-year-old girl, grows up in a large mansion after the death of her father. She lives in a world of memories, fantasies, and secrets. Ana Torrent plays the young Ana with a penetrating gaze that stays with you.
Political trauma through the eyes of a child
Saura uses the perspective of a child to depict the Spain of the 1970s. The house symbolizes a country trying to escape its past. Family suffering and political oppression intertwine in the film. Cría Cuervos became a key work of Spanish cinema and is considered one of the most important European films of the 1970s.
