About the event

A concert with Iván Fischer is always a treat. After Weber's Overture 'Der Freischütz', the Concertgebouw Orchestra shares the stage with piano prodigy Yunchan Lim for Liszt's Second Piano Concerto. Then it is time for Schubert's magnificent Ninth, not without reason called the 'Great' symphony. Yunchan Lim plays Liszt Yunchan Lim is currently the rising star in the world of piano. Anyone who heard his sensational debut with us in January 2026 knows that this is no hype! Just a year later, he is already back. In Franz Liszt's spectacular Second Piano Concerto, the young South Korean can showcase the full facets of his abilities. The work offers much more than virtuosity: here, Liszt tells a romantic story in which the themes are the characters. They find themselves in diverse situations, clash with one another, and form alliances. And, of course, the ever-capricious Liszt ultimately gives this drama an unexpected twist. Conductor Iván Fischer frames the piano concerto with two highlights from the early Romantic era. Carl Maria von Weber ushered the opera world into a new chapter with Der Freischütz. The overture intertwines melodies from the opera into an independent orchestral work that continues to enjoy great success. Schubert's Symphony No. 9 In his sublime Ninth Symphony, Schubert takes the orchestra out of its comfort zone. The wind instruments, in particular, have unusually intense parts. The symphony was not performed until eleven years after Schubert's death, thanks to Robert Schumann, who found the manuscript and recognized it as a masterpiece. 'Here we hear human voices, life, richness of color, and profundity,' he wrote. Schubert at the peak of his powers: pure delight.
