In a film more inspired by Poe than directly adapted from his work, Jack Nicholson plays Andre Duvalier, a Napoleonic soldier separated from his troop who pursues a phantom-like beauty to a mysterious, decaying castle. He encounters Baron von Leppe, who insists that no such woman resides there. But within the walls a terrible truth lurks. The film was shot with unseemly haste on sets built for The Raven, its slightly disjointed narrative only adding to the sense of unease.
