Writer Howard Browne had written a segment of US anthology TV series Playhouse 90 about the legendary gangland massacre. Corman hired him to write the film, which employed a similar docu-drama style. A war breaks out between rival gangs led by Al Capone and ‘Bugs’ Moran. The film is surprisingly – and rewardingly – short on sensationalism and devoid of the romanticism usually associated with the genre. 4K restoration from the original negative. Screen: NFT3.
