About the event
Opening in a deeply racist Virginia in 1958, Richard and Mildred are arrested and exiled from the state for their interracial marriage, which violates miscegenation laws. Their legal fight for the right to live at home as a married couple would eventually culminate in the historic 1967 Supreme Court case. Nichols’ film charts their campaign less as a pivotal civil rights moment and more as a deeply personal and intimate portrait of the couple. Screen: NFT3. Screening details: Special screening available; Descriptive subtitles (open captions); Q&A with Lola Young and actor Ruth Negga.
