“Declaration of Love to Lenin”, an exhibition by Juana Dolores Romero Casanova
La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Carrer la Rambla 99, Barcelona
About the event
Curator: Valentín Roma "Déjeme decirle, a riesgo de parecer ridículo, que el verdadero revolucionario está guiado por grandes sentimientos de amor” (“Let me say, at the risk of seeming ridiculous, that the true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love”).. Taking this quote by Ernesto Che Guevara as her central premise, Juana Dolores traces the historical and theoretical evolution of the concept of love within the revolutionary tradition, while simultaneously equating and comparing his class-based resentment and hatred with his romantic resentment and hatred. She asks: what kind of love might exist under communism, and how would it differ from love under capitalism? For now, amidst a crisis of capitalism—and the consequent rise of the far right and new forms of fascism—the artist confesses that she can only feel, think, and work based on the certainty that the only true love possible in this world of material and spiritual poverty is love for the revolution. And to commit herself with the lucidity and passion that characterize lovers whose love is returned. Official opening: 10 July, 7 pm
