They come in all shapes and sizes. Some try to connect, others to disrupt: climate speeches. For nearly half a century, they have been delivered at all kinds of conferences and on various stages: by world leaders to scientists and activists. All different in tone, but what connects them is a sense of urgency and a call for change. 'Beste Mensen' is a monologue inspired by 50 years of climate speeches. Anoek Nuyens For *Voor Beste Mensen*, theatre maker and writer Anoek Nuyens researched climate speeches from the past fifty years. The performance thus presents not only historical speeches but also reveals the history of the climate movement. It was once characterized by optimism, when both left-wing and right-wing politicians, such as Margaret Thatcher and Richard Nixon, called for tackling this 'new big problem'. Now, fifty years later, that optimism has given way to despair, and young people and climate activists are taking to the streets all over the world. The question now on the table is: what comes after that despair? Could the turning point lie in the sum of the speeches?
