About the event
AquaTerra brings together six artists whose practices explore the art of living between the ocean and the land — a space where water meets earth, where landscape shifts with the tides, and where nature continually shapes and reshapes our experience of place. Drawing inspiration from coastal environments, the artists in AquaTerra investigate the textures, rhythms, colours and organic forms of the natural world. Through ceramics and fibre art, they translate their individual connections to the coast into works that invite us to pause, look closely and consider the delicate relationship between land and water. Fibre artists Nicole de Mestre and Carmen Hogue explore the tactile and transformative qualities of fibre. Their works evoke the movement, fragility and resilience found in coastal landscapes, drawing on natural textures, patterns and forms. Through weaving, stitching and the manipulation of fibre, they create works that speak to the interconnectedness of the natural environment and our place within it. Ceramic artists Linda Agresti-Hogue, Emilia Krumm, Gill McLaren and Annette Heidrich bring the elemental qualities of clay to the exhibition. Clay itself carries an intrinsic connection to land — formed from the earth, shaped by water and transformed through fire. Their diverse approaches to ceramics explore this relationship through functional and sculptural forms, surface, texture and colour. The works in AquaTerra reflect the many moods of the coastal environment: the movement of waves, the quietness of tidal pools, the textures of rocks and shells, the shifting patterns of sand, and the organic forms of marine and terrestrial life. Some works are bold and expressive, while others are subtle and contemplative, encouraging viewers to discover details and connections beneath the surface. Together, these six artists create a dialogue between aqua and terra — water and earth, fluidity and solidity, movement and stillness. Their work reminds us that these environments are not separate but deeply interconnected. The coastline is a place of constant transition, where boundaries are fluid and where the forces of nature are visible in every changing tide, weathered surface and evolving landscape. AquaTerra celebrates this liminal space and the inspiration it provides. It is an invitation to experience the coast through the eyes and hands of six artists, each offering a distinctive interpretation of the natural world and our relationship with it. Through fibre and clay, texture and form, AquaTerra explores not only the beauty of the environments between land and sea, but also our enduring connection to them.
