Getting fired from 11 newspapers has done little to dent the bravado of Chuck Tatum, a hot-shot reporter who swaggers his way into Albuquerque in pursuit of a story. When he stumbles across the fate of Leo Minosa, trapped in a collapsed cave, he sees dollar signs. The ensuing circus provides the perfect sword on which to skewer the American public, the media machine and an inescapable thirst for success. Time has re-evaluated the film as one of Wilder’s most incisive works, which holds an entire culture accountable for the outsized role the media has.
