Is this your event?About the event
Kelapa Muda is a connecting performance full of music, rituals and movement about the question of what it means to be Moluccan in the Netherlands today. Loving, curious and critical, the 3rd generation examines itself and the past in order to consciously focus its gaze on the future. Complete your visit to Kelapa Muda on Thursday, October 8: including a meal and a guided tour of the exhibition Chahaya Maluku at CBK Zuidoost. 75 years of Moluccan resilience in the Netherlands
Kelapa Muda means young coconut in Malay. A symbol of strength from within: hard on the outside, soft and nutritious on the inside. Three theatre makers of Moluccan descent delve into their personal family histories and show 75 years of Moluccan resilience in the Netherlands.
In Joenoes’ family, the suitcases were always packed, because the family would one day return to the Moluccas. Joenoes wants his own children to know: we also belong here, in the Netherlands. So that they can truly put down roots.
Tara grew up with few stories about her Moluccan ancestors. When she goes on a quest, she discovers that she is more connected to her Moluccan roots than she herself knew.
Jefta stands with one foot in the Dutch community and one foot in the Moluccan community. He feels at home in both, but sometimes also misunderstood.
Combi-ticket: Moluccan meal and art at CBK Zuidoost
Prior to the performance Kelapa Muda, you will receive a Moluccan meal and a guided tour of the exhibition Cahaya Maluku – Molukse makers in het licht, which can be seen at CBK Zuidoost from 5 September to 22 November 2026.
Exhibition Cahaya Maluku
The exhibition, curated by NEXT-curator Lars Bogaers (SNARS), marks 75 years of Moluccan presence in the Netherlands and brings together work by 8 contemporary artists with Moluccan roots. From diverse generations, diasporas and island groups, they show how versatile the Moluccan identity is. Central themes include memory, migration, family history, connection and cultural transmission. The title Cahaya Maluku means 'Light of the Moluccas' and symbolises hope, strength, visibility and connection.
