How To Write an Obituary (your own or someone else’s)

As New York Times obit writer Margalit Fox says, “Obituaries have next to nothing to do with death and absolutely everything to do with life.”

Death notices have been written to be shared for thousands of years. They’ve changed because our attitudes about death have changed. Now, humor is not out of place. In this workshop you will learn about the history of obituaries, tips on writing them, and the importance of having one.

About the presenter:

Rebecca Morris teaches various writing classes at branches of The Seattle Public Library. During her 50-year career in journalism, Rebecca worked for NPR in New York City, for network television, and wrote for newspapers and magazines. She is a New York Times bestselling author and has written nine true crime books, two of which were made as TV movies.
