Lady Bird
About the event
Saoirse Ronan plays Christine, a headstrong American teenager who calls herself 'Lady Bird', in Greta Gerwig's directorial debut. Follow her struggle with her mother and her dream of studying in New York. Showing at Lab111 in Amsterdam. A coming-of-age story about identity and resistance
Lady Bird is the directorial debut of actress Greta Gerwig. The film follows Christine, a teenage girl in Sacramento who calls herself 'Lady Bird'. She rebels against her surroundings, her school, and especially her mother. Saoirse Ronan plays her convincingly: headstrong, funny, and vulnerable all at the same time. The film is set in 2002 and paints a relatable picture of growing up in a typical American city.
The battle between mother and daughter
The relationship between Lady Bird and her mother (played by Laurie Metcalf) forms the heart of the film. Both want the best for themselves, but clash on almost every point. Lady Bird dreams of studying at a university in New York. Her mother sees things differently. Gerwig portrays this tension with humor and honesty, without giving either of them the benefit of the doubt.
Award-winning film at Lab111 Amsterdam
Lady Bird won a Golden Globe for Best Picture and Best Director. Saoirse Ronan received an Oscar nomination for her role. You can see the film at Lab111, an intimate little cinema in Amsterdam West with a unique character.
