In the third instalment of her autobiography, Márta Mészáros continues the fateful story of her alter ego. In the wake of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, Juli returns from Moscow to Budapest. The Soviet authorities are tightening their grip on both the public and private lives of Hungarians. The ‘ Diary trilogy’ by Hungarian filmmaker Márta Mészáros (1931, Budapest) follows the turbulent life of orphan Juli, whose father – a fervent Communist – emigrated to the Soviet Union before disappearing during the Stalinist purges. Her mother also died young. Juli goes to study at the film academy in Moscow, returning to the city of her birth in November 1956.
