About the event

Take inspiration from Willem de Kooning's innovative drawing techniques to create experimental works in one of three Drop-In Sketching programs inspired by the iconic Abstract Expressionist and the exhibition, Willem de Kooning Drawing. With programs in August, September, and October, this series allows participants to drop into a single session or build on their approach to drawing by attending two or three. Please note that this program is scheduled to be held in Pritzker Garden. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held inside the museum. Our Visitor Engagement team at the front desk of either museum entrance can confirm the event location for participants on the day of the event. what to expect This program is open to all experience levels. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sketchbooks and pencils. All necessary materials will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Except in case of inclement weather, this program will take place outdoors on the museum’s campus. Please note that this program involves the use of pastels, Conté crayons, and other materials that may stain clothing. All participants are encouraged to wear studio clothes or clothing you do not mind dirtying. about the instructor Nancy Chen is associate director of Gallery Activation, part of the Interpretation department at the Art Institute of Chicago. She manages a portfolio of gallery programs that encourage adult and multi-generational audiences to creatively respond to artworks across the museum's vast collections. Nancy's creative practices include writing, drawing, printmaking, and an openness to many genres of working with and on paper.
