In Living Memory (ECHOES ATX)
About the event
Join us for the opening reception on Friday, November 13. Celebrate with the artists and community while exploring the exhibition, enjoying music, food, and drinks. The show will remain on display until January. Curated by Shania Montúfar. In Living Memory is free and open to the public, with a suggested $5 donation. In Living Memory brings together contemporary artists, community archivists, and historical materials to celebrate the memory, presence, and imagination of Black and Hispanic Austin. Presented by ECHOES ATX at the George Washington Carver Museum, the exhibition explores how communities remember their past, document their present, and preserve their stories for future generations. Through photography, painting, film, textiles, sculpture, sound, and multimedia installations, participating artists explore the everyday experiences that make up a city's cultural history, from family traditions and neighborhood gatherings to migration, displacement, and the places people have called home. Featured artists include Larry Choyce, whose documentary photographs capture Black life in East Austin; Bieke Campos, whose paintings draw from his experiences growing up in East Austin public housing; and Leslie Lozano (Ella Ella), whose multimedia ofrenda honors Tejano cultural traditions. Reneiss Ilisha Garcia explores intergenerational memory through community archiving and storytelling, while Robyn B. Adams brings Black queer and trans experiences into the exhibition through poetry, music, and sound. Additional works by Faiza Kracheni, Chia Webb-Cázares, Alejandro Hendricks, Brandon Boone, and Via Madison expand the exhibition through experimental film, photography, and multidisciplinary artistic practices. The exhibition also features a community art wall, bringing additional local artists and creative voices into the space. This project is supported in part by the City of Austin through the Elevate grant program of the Office of Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment (ACME).
