About the event

Looking for a relaxed day away from Seattle without having to drive? Join us for a day trip to Bainbridge Island where we'll combine art, a little island exploring, a scenic beach, and the option to visit an important piece of local history. We'll take the ferry from Seattle, explore Winslow, visit the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, meet Pia the Peacekeeper at Sakai Park, and then make our way to Fay Bainbridge Park for some time by the water and, hopefully, beautiful views of the Cascades and Mount Baker. This is meant to be a laid-back day rather than a rushed itinerary. We'll have some flexibility along the way and enjoy the island at a comfortable pace. Our Plan 10:40 AM — Seattle → Bainbridge Island Ferry We'll meet at the Seattle ferry terminal and take the ferry across Puget Sound. The ferry ride itself is part of the experience, with views of Seattle, the Sound, and the Olympic Mountains depending on the weather. \~11:15 AM — Arrive on Bainbridge Island Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (Free entry) We'll start with a visit to the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, located near the ferry terminal in Winslow. We'll have about an hour to look around and enjoy the exhibits. Afterward, we'll walk toward the Route 385 bus stop at Winslow and Ericksen. Sakai Park + Pia the Peacekeeper We'll take the free Route 385 shuttle toward Madison Avenue and get off near Sakai Park. Sakai Park is a nice little break from the busier part of Winslow, with a small nature area and walking paths. The main reason for our stop, though, is Pia the Peacekeeper — Bainbridge Island's friendly troll sculpture. We'll spend roughly 30–45 minutes exploring the park, taking some photos, and meeting Pia before continuing to the next part of the day. Fay Bainbridge Park From Sakai Park, we'll request a BI Ride/Pingo to take us toward Fay Bainbridge Park. This is where we'll slow things down and enjoy the outdoors. We'll have time to: • Walk along the beach • Explore the park • Relax and have lunch/snacks • Take photos • Enjoy the views across Puget Sound • Look for views of Mount Baker and the Cascade Mountains The exact timing may vary depending on BI Ride availability, so we'll keep this portion of the day flexible. Optional: Japanese American Exclusion Memorial If everyone is interested and we have enough time, we can add one more stop: the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial. This is an optional part of the itinerary, not a requirement. If the group decides to go, we'll arrange a Pingo/BI Ride from Fay Bainbridge Park to the memorial, spend some time there, and then request another ride from the memorial back to the Bainbridge ferry terminal. It's a meaningful historical site, and I'd encourage people to join if they're interested in learning more about the history of Japanese American incarceration during World War II. Because this is an optional addition, we'll make the decision as a group based on everyone's interest, available time, and transportation availability. Getting Back to Seattle There are several ferry options in the evening: 5:35 PM 6:30 PM 7:15 PM We'll aim for an appropriate sailing based on how the day goes. If we visit the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial, we'll most likely aim for one of the later ferries rather than rushing through the other stops. A Few Things to Know This isn't a traditional hike, but there will be quite a bit of walking throughout the day. We'll be using: • Washington State Ferries • Walking • Kitsap Transit's Route 385 • BI Ride/Pingo as needed Since we're relying on public transportation and on-demand rides, the itinerary has some flexibility built in. Please be comfortable with adjusting the timing if a shuttle or Pingo ride takes longer than expected. Bring: • Comfortable walking shoes • Water • Lunch/snacks • Sunscreen • Layers for changing weather • A light rain jacket • Camera/phone for photos The Day in a Nutshell Seattle ferry ↓ Bainbridge Island Museum of Art ↓ Sakai Park +…
