ABOUT THE FILM: One of the earliest horror films, FAUST (1926) was renowned director F. W. Murnau’s last film in Germany before moving to Hollywood for the making of SUNRISE. A visually stunning example of German Expressionism, the film takes a mythic look at the battle of good versus evil just before the rise of Nazi Germany. Elder alchemist Faust (Gösta Ekman) sells his soul to the devil (Emil Jannings) to gain youth and power, only to succumb to temptation and lust, before finding the redemptive power of love. FAUST combines ingenious special effects and gorgeous visual sequences that later influenced other films such as FANTASIA and forces viewers to confront difficult moral choices and values.
