Terr is a domestic Om, adopted by Tiwa, a Draag, after some young Draag killed his mother while playing. The Draag are blue-skinned aliens dozens of meters tall who inhabit a planet named Ygam, whose only moon is what is called the savage planet. The Draag treat the Oms as pets and give them to their children to play with. But one day Terr discovers he can learn through the machine that provides instruction to his mistress. He then decides to escape during a meditation session (in which the Draag minds detach from their bodies) and joins a group of wild Oms. Hated for his education, his knowledge soon proves essential to the survival of his species.
