This impressive documentary on a Surinamese washerwoman was inspired by Tessa Leuwsha's grandmother Fansi. Her life story comprises the period from the abolition of slavery in 1863 right the way through to Surinam’s independence in 1975.
Fansi's story starts in an abandoned town where she grew up as the house slave after her white mother and black father gave her up for adoption. When Fansi becomes pregnant at a young age and is left by her husband, she moves to Paramaribo to offer her children a better future.
