About the event

Thursday August 27 * doors 6:30, music 7:00 * $10-20 * TICKETS Kylan Hillman is a composer, electric guitarist, improviser and digital instrument creator. Kylan’s work deals with mess, the beauty of imperfection, performer perception and he has explored these central concepts through indeterminacy/improvisation, scrambling/destroying musical material and interrogating our relationship to time and memory. Kylan’s solo performances consist of playing his guitar in unusual ways and with unusual objects like butter knives, metal picks, combs and then augmenting his sound with digital programs that he designs himself. According to a plethora of Facebook hate comments, Sarah Parker ’s practice centers around “devolving the saxophone with attention-seeking gimmicks,” some of which include: modifying instruments with tubes, animal calls, and live electronics; turning a preserved heart specimen into an electronic instrument; and performing fake dental surgery on unsuspecting audience members. Through her “attention-seekings,” Sarah aims to redefine the performer-instrumental relationship by inventing scenarios which dismantle tradition and expand music-making into a curiosity-centered, interdisciplinary process. As a composer, performer, and educator, she believes that exploration challenges us to listen, and to live, in radically new and healthy ways. Sarah is a Baltimore-based composer and saxophonist and performs regularly with her trio Sophie Rollover and as a member of Wieldflower Arts. Forrest Wentzel composes music that blurs the line between the surreal and the natural. His concert music often incorporates electroacoustic elements, creating uncanny spaces where both organic and inorganic sounds can flourish. He uses these elements to form deeply personal narratives which can be felt either explicitly or implicitly through the music. His music has recently premiered at the esteemed Splice Institute and the Nief Norf Summer Festival. He has also composed, recorded, and produced over 250 short musical cues intended for television. Forrest regularly performs improvised music as a member of Sophie Rollover with Michael Begay (guitar) and Sarah Parker (alto saxophone). Caleb J Abner was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a doctoral candidate at the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins, where he studies with Felipe Lara. He writes acoustic music, electronic music, electroacoustic music, and noise music that some people wouldn’t consider music at all. His work looks to combine the things he loves, including but not limited to: rhythms and phrasings derived from spoken English and rap, overtone chords, musique concrète instrumentale, functional harmony, perceptually-ambiguous-yet-subconsciously-coherent global structures, self-referential themes based on classical thematic formulae, non-diatonic melodies, dynamic stasis, and static dynamicism. Dominic Lingg is a vibraphonist and improviser from North Carolina, currently based out of Baltimore. They are in their third year of study as a Jazz Performance major at the Peabody Institute. They’ve been hitting things with mallets for some time now and don’t plan to stop any time soon, even if you ask nicely.
