Inflected and informed by the traditional music they mutate within the larger group, they negotiate an improvisation that has been variably described as ‘farmyard’ and ‘rodeo’. By turns scrabbling and sweeping, passing motifs rise and fall in quick attacks, short decays and dense bursts of momentary composition. Sullow Jacken Elswyth Daniel S. Evans Joshua Barfoot Shovel Dance Collective is a duo comprising (nyckelharpa) and (hammered dulcimer), who met playing in processional folk-horror ensemble sometime in 2017. They also now also help to coordinate the minimalist free-folk project. As a duo they seek routes into a free-flowing, improvised folk music via the raw, tonal harmonies of their ancient instruments.
