About the event

In the documentary Eat More Trees, food forest expert Louis De Jaeger travels from the Amazon rainforest to agricultural areas in Europe and America. The film shows how agroforestry restores soils, strengthens biodiversity, and enables a more sustainable food system. Screening at De Balie in Amsterdam. A world without fertile soil

Every year, 24 billion tons of fertile soil disappear worldwide. That is 30 football fields per minute. The documentary Eat More Trees by director Arne Focketyn poses an urgent question: what happens to our food when the ground beneath it vanishes? The film does not offer a somber answer, but shows a different path.

From the Amazon region to European fields

Food forest expert Louis De Jaeger travels from the Amazon rainforest to agricultural areas in Europe and America. Along the way, he meets farmers who are opting for agroforestry: a farming method where trees and crops work together. You see how this approach restores depleted soil, brings back biodiversity, and makes the land more resilient to drought and heat.

Personal stories about regenerative agriculture

One of the main characters is the Dutch Yanniek Schoonhoven. Together with her husband, she is transforming 1,100 hectares of degraded land in Murcia, Spain, into an example of regenerative agriculture. The film connects her story with that of other pioneers worldwide. Actress Hanna Verboom provides the voice-over.
