Fjord

The Gheorghius, a devout Romanian Norwegian couple, resettle in a village set in a distant fjord where they become close to their neighbours, the Halbergs. Their children bond despite their different education. When adolescent Elia Gheorghiu shows up at school with some bruises on her body, the community asks itself if the traditional education that the Gheorghiu children get from their parents might have anything to do with it. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Fjord marks another masterclass in moral ambiguity from director Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, R.M.N.). Anchored by magnetic, career-defining performances from Stan and Reinsve, the film dissects the terrifying machinery of state intervention with surgical narrative precision. Framed in stark long-take cinematography that captures the icy, claustrophobic grandeur of its Scandinavian setting, Fjord is an explosive, thought-provoking drama bound to spark debate. In Romanian and Norwegian with English subtitles. Rated NC16 for Some Nudity. TW: Contains depictions of self-harm.
