The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

Thanks to everyone who joined for our discussion of Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary today. As always, it was a pleasure to see both familiar and new faces, and I hope you all enjoyed the conversation.

The next book to read is *The Picture of Dorian Gray* (1890/1891) by Oscar Wilde.

Set in late Victorian London, the novel follows the young and extraordinarily beautiful Dorian Gray. After having his portrait painted by the artist Basil Hallward, Dorian becomes increasingly influenced by the hedonistic worldview of Lord Henry Wotton. Wishing that he could remain young while the portrait ages in his place, Dorian gradually embarks on a life of indulgence, secrecy and moral corruption.

One of the most famous is the 1945 film starring Angela Lansbury available for free on [JustWatchTV. ](https://www.justwatch.com/dk/movie/the-picture-of-dorian-gray-1945)The film received three Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Black-and-White Cinematography, while Lansbury also won a Golden Globe for her supporting performance.
