So this is essentially two completely different museum experiences in one afternoon. This is Pop Art—but not simply a retrospective. *Guggenheim Pop: 1960 to Now* traces the explosive emergence of Pop in the early 1960s and follows its influence all the way into contemporary art. Advertising. Comic strips. Consumer products. Movies. Mass media. Celebrity. Everyday objects. Artists took imagery that surrounded ordinary people and completely transformed the boundaries between popular culture and fine art. And we're talking about some very recognizable names: 🎨 Andy Warhol 🎨 Roy Lichtenstein 🎨 Yayoi Kusama 🎨 Claes Oldenburg & Coosje van Bruggen 🎨 Richard Hamilton 🎨 Jim Dine ...alongside contemporary artists who continue to reinterpret Pop's influence today. The exhibition also tells an important Guggenheim story. In 1963, curator Lawrence Alloway organized *Six Painters and the Object* at the Guggenheim—the first museum presentation of Pop Art in New York. More than six decades later, this exhibition looks at where Pop began and what became of its legacy. * ⭐ SOME VERY SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS There are several works here that make this exhibition particularly interesting. 🍌 Maurizio Cattelan's *Comedian* — yes, THAT artwork: the banana attached to the wall. 🏸 Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen's *Soft Shuttlecock* — being shown in New York for the first time in 25 years. ✨ And Yayoi Kusama's *INFINITY MIRRORED ROOM – DANCING LIGHTS THAT FLEW UP TO THE UNIVERSE*, a major loan to the exhibition. We'll continue on our own through the Guggenheim's brand-new major exhibition by Taryn Simon, opening September 18—just eight days before we arrive. And this one sounds fascinating. Simon is known for using photography and storytelling to examine the hidden systems, unseen forces and narratives that shape the world around us. For this major Guggenheim exhibition, she has created an entirely new body of work incorporating: 📷 Never-before-seen photographs 🎥 Video 📝 Text 🗿 Sculpture 🌀 Interactive installation And here's what makes it particularly appropriate for the Guggenheim: The exhibition fills the entire Rotunda.
