Step into a disused Tube station that closed to the public over 30 years ago. Explore its turn-of-the-century ticket hall, lifts and platforms, and hear about the key roles that it played throughout history, from wartime shelter to TV and film location. Opened in 1907, Aldwych (also known as “Strand”) was once a terminus of the Piccadilly line, serving trains to and from nearby Holborn station. However, it was never as heavily used as intended and closed to the public in 1994. Led by our expert guides, this tour takes you behind the station’s famous red-tiled façade to unveil its architectural treasures, fascinating history, and the surprising roles it played over the years – both in and out of service – as it navigated the twists and turns of the 20th century. Exclusive access to a fully disused Tube station Explore a station complete with two platforms, interconnecting tunnels, a ticket hall, and walkways – but no passengers or trains. Spot decades-old advertising posters frozen in time since they were last seen by commuters and experience the eerie atmosphere of a deserted time capsule in the heart of Central London. See the Underground as it was 100 years ago Step back in time and immerse yourself in the beautifully preserved Leslie Green architecture that defined the Edwardian era. Retrace the steps of passengers from over a century ago in the turn-of-the-century ticket hall, step into the original 1907 lifts, and admire vintage tiles and signs dotted throughout the station. Hear about the early days of the Piccadilly line Discover how the joining of two railways in 1902 led to the creation of one of London’s most famous Tube lines. Learn how the Holborn-Aldwych branch came about as part of the then-new Great Northern Railway, and uncover other little-known historical facts based on our exclusive findings from the archives. Visit a war-time shelter Learn how Aldwych station played a key role during both World Wars, sheltering Londoners from air raids and protecting some of the nation’s most valuable artworks. Hear newly uncovered first-hand testimonials from those who sought refuge underground, with recorded letters from the public offering deeply personal insights into what life was like for those sheltering from the Blitz. Discover how the station’s role extended beyond providing safety, with stories of the entertainment and community spirit that kept morale high beneath the city streets. Step into a famous filming location Experience the station’s history through film clips showcasing how the station’s life extended far beyond its closure, and discover Aldwych’s current role as a filming venue. Explore the station’s corridors, ticket hall, and platforms, which have been featured in iconic film and TV productions, including Sherlock, Luther: The Fallen Sun, Mr Selfridge, 28 Weeks Later, and Netflix’s Bodies.
