Iván Fischer conducts Stravinsky's Firebird with the Concertgebouw Orchestra
About the event
Conductor Iván Fischer leads the Concertgebouw Orchestra in works by Stravinsky, including the colorful ballet music The Firebird and the rarely performed comic 'winter fairy tale' Der Silbersee by Kurt Weill. Ivan Fischer conducts Stravinsky
Iván Fischer is one of the Concertgebouw Orchestra's favorite guest conductors, and Stravinsky is one of Fischer's favorite composers. The nice thing about a Stravinsky program is that you hear different kinds of music. This utterly unique composer lived and worked in old Russia, France, and modern America. His style changed as often as he moved. His famous breakthrough work, The Firebird, is a quintessential Russian fairy-tale ballet with vibrant colors and rhythms. In addition, graceful neoclassical music is performed that Stravinsky wrote in Hollywood during the Second World War.
Weill's Der Silbersee
A special surprise is Kurt Weill's 'winter fairy tale' Der Silbersee. This cheerful opera is rarely performed, despite the catchy melodies in which Weill always excelled. The work was banned by the Nazis because of its socially critical message. Later performances were hampered by the high demands placed on the singers and actors. A wonderful opportunity to dive into a true musical gem!
