About the event

Book Club Meeting: *The Blade Itself* by Joe Abercrombie Step into a world where wars are fought for power, old grudges refuse to die, and heroes are rarely as heroic as they seem. *The Blade Itself* by Joe Abercrombie is a dark, sharp-witted fantasy filled with brutal battles, political maneuvering, morally complicated characters, and a healthy dose of cynicism about the idea of heroes.

At the center of the story are three very different characters whose lives begin to intertwine. Logen Ninefingers is a feared Northman and notorious killer trying to leave his violent past behind—though his reputation has a way of following him. Jezal dan Luthar is a privileged young nobleman and arrogant swordsman whose greatest concerns have been winning glory, impressing the right people, and surviving his own ego. And Sand dan Glokta, once a celebrated swordsman, is now a crippled and bitter inquisitor who has become frighteningly good at making other people suffer.

As tensions rise between the Union and its enemies, these unlikely figures are drawn into a much larger struggle involving war, politics, magic, and ancient powers. Along the way, they encounter Bayaz, a mysterious and powerful wizard who may know far more about the world—and its history—than he is willing to reveal.

The story moves between battlefields, royal courts, grim interrogation rooms, and dangerous journeys, gradually revealing a world where almost everyone has an agenda and good intentions rarely survive contact with reality. Abercrombie plays with familiar fantasy archetypes while turning them on their heads, asking what happens when the supposedly noble hero is an arrogant fool, the terrifying warrior is surprisingly thoughtful, and the monster has a point.

With its dark humor, unforgettable characters, vicious action, and wonderfully cynical take on traditional fantasy, *The Blade Itself* explores themes of power and ambition, identity and redemption, violence and its consequences, and whether people can truly change—or whether they are simply doomed to repeat themselves.

Expect a lively and often hilarious discussion about Abercrombie’s morally gray characters, the subversion of classic fantasy tropes, Glokta’s uniquely horrifying worldview, Logen’s complicated relationship with violence, Jezal’s spectacular lack of self-awareness, and Bayaz’s mysterious role in the story. There will also be plenty to discuss about the novel’s humor, brutality, character development, and the question of whether anyone in this world can actually be called a “good guy.” ⚔️

And don’t worry if you didn’t quite finish the book—or if you’re still trying to decide which character you trust the least! You're still warmly welcome to join. Come for the conversation, listen in, share your theories, and connect with fellow readers 📚
