EU AI Act: Prohibited Practices
About the event
Join us for a discussion of Article 5 of the EU AI Act, which identifies AI practices the European Union prohibits because of their potential to undermine autonomy, enable discrimination, or create serious harms to individuals and society. [EU AI Act: Prohibited Practices, Article V](https://artificialintelligenceact.eu/article/5/)
We’ll use the article as a starting point—not as a lecture on EU law—to examine what meaningful AI “red lines” look like in practice. Topics will include: • Manipulative or deceptive AI that materially impairs informed decision-making • Systems that exploit vulnerabilities related to age, disability, or socioeconomic circumstances • AI-driven social scoring that results in unjustified or disproportionate harmful treatment • Predictive policing based solely on profiling or personality characteristics • Untargeted scraping of internet or CCTV images to build facial-recognition databases • Emotion-recognition systems in workplaces and educational institutions • Biometric categorization used to infer sensitive traits, such as political views, religion, or sexual orientation • The tightly constrained use of real-time facial recognition in public spaces for law-enforcement purposes We’ll explore the governance questions beneath the rules: What separates a prohibited practice from a high-risk one? When do safeguards meaningfully reduce risk—and when are certain applications too invasive to justify? How should organizations identify prohibited or unacceptable uses before a system is deployed? No legal or technical background is required. Come ready to share examples, challenge assumptions, and discuss how these principles may apply beyond the EU—including in U.S. workplaces, public services, security, and consumer technology.
