The nadhaswaram is a mangala vadyam (auspicious instrument) is not merely an accompaniment, but rather an active part of what makes an occasion sacred. This session aims to help listeners hear gamaka, the sliding ornamentation that gives a raga its identity, most audible on the nadhaswaram’s fretless pipe. The instrument’s global cousins are featured, from the Turkish zurna to the Chinese suona. The session closes with Sheikh Chinna Moulana, the Muslim vidwan from a three-century lineage who became Asthana Vidwan at Srirangam and Tirupati.
