High Park Has Some Explaining to Do

Exciting seasonal opportunities are once again available in High Park!

Each spring, the City generously permits its flowering trees to bloom, triggering a coordinated public response in which residents from across the province converge on High Park for the purpose of taking approximately the same photograph. Nature continues to deliver strong seasonal results!

As we transition into autumn, the spring activation has concluded, the crowds have dispersed, and the leaves are changing. This creates an exciting new opportunity to engage with High Park from a different perspective and revisit the park you think you know.

Pumpkin-spiced historian Andrew Nablo has been cleared to discuss the matter. Join him for an autumn walk through Toronto’s expansive exercise in municipal park-making, featuring forgotten stories, vanished landscapes, eccentric characters, ambitious civic schemes, architectural surprises, and a few persistent myths that have not yet been adequately addressed.

It’s not called High Park because it’s flat. Visitors should be advised that certain portions of the park exhibit a pronounced upward tendency. Select hills are considered manageable and will be monitored for compliance. Unnecessary exercise will be avoided wherever historically possible.

No prior knowledge is required. Curiosity is strongly encouraged.
