Music of Iran: Rebwar Music Group
About the event
The Music of Iran concert series, presented in collaboration with the Iranian Music Society of BC (IMSBC), celebrates the diverse peoples, languages, and cultures of Iran via intimate musical performances highlighting the wide range of musical traditions that define this country's fascinating musical identity. In this concert, the Rebwar Music Group introduces the audience to the music of the tanbur. The tanbur is one of Iran’s ancient plucked string instruments, with a history dating back many centuries. It holds a special place in the culture and music of the Kurdish regions of western Iran, particularly Kermanshah Province, and has been an important part of the musical and ritual traditions of the people of this region for generations. In addition to its ritual and mystical aspects, tanbur music reflects the stories, narratives, and oral heritage of the region, much of which has been passed down orally from one generation to the next. This program features a selection of ancient tanbur maqams alongside pieces composed for the instrument by contemporary composers and musicians. These works introduce the audience to the broad range of tanbur music, from traditional and ritual maqams to contemporary musical expression. Featuring: Maryam Soroushnasab: Tanbur, vocals Shahin Pourghiasian: Tanbur, vocals Siavash Mobaraki: Tanbur, vocals Amirhossein Sadeghian: Tanbur, vocals Atin Cheraghchi: Percussion This program is presented in partnership with the Iranian Music Society of BC. IMSBC performances are funded in part by the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors program.
