Metropolis (1927) Wishful Singing, Yonga Sun, Steven Kamperman & Jorrit Westerhof
About the event
The hundred-year-old, iconic science fiction epic Metropolis presents us with a dystopian world in the year 2026 (!) as director Fritz Lang envisioned it. Underground, workers toil to keep colossal machines running, while above them the elite live in luxury. At the centre is a young woman who offers the workers hope and calls for harmony. Until her appearance is copied to a robot that is programmed with a very different purpose. Come and listen and watch at Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ. An ominous vision of the future for 2026
This immersive, timeless classic raises questions about power, technology and humanity that feel just as urgent today as they did then. But does the film's ending offer a satisfying answer? Vocal ensemble Wishful Singing performs new music by Steven Kamperman, which he composed especially for this ensemble. The music, with its ghostly vocals, haunting percussion and crossovers between human and machine, not only adds an extra layer, but also challenges you to view and question this iconic classic in a contemporary way, 100 years after its premiere.
